perhaps it was just thar I had grown uscd to ir, grown to accept
West Egg as a world complete in itself, and now I was looking
at ir again, through Daisy's eyes.
They arrived as darkness was beginning to fall, and Daisy's
lovely voice was playing murmuring tricks in her chroat, as we
walked out among thc hundreds of gucsts on the lawn.
'These things excite me so,' shc whispercd. 'If you want to
kiss me at any time cluring che evening, Nick, just let me know
and I'll be glacl to arrange it for you. Just mention my name.
Or present a green card. T'm giving out green-'
'Look around,' suggesced Garsby. 'You muse see che faces of
            many people you've heard about.'
Tom's arroganr eyes searched che crowd. 'I was just chinking,
            l don't know anyonc here.'
Garsby took Tom and Daisy from group to group,
inrroducing them to actors, film dircctors, singers, sportsmen,
            businessmen.
'l've never mee so many famous people!' cried Daisy.
She and Gacsby danced. 1 was surprised by his beauriful
dancing - l'd ncver seen him dance beforc. Then thcy walkcd
over to my housc and sac on che stcps for half an hour, whilc
ac Daisy's request I remained warchfully in che garden. 'In case
there's a fire or a flood,' she explained, 'or any act of God.'
Tom rcappeared as we werc sitting down to supper togcther.
'Do you mind if I eat wirh some people over chere?' he
asked. 'A man's starred rclling some jokes.'
'Go ahead,' answered Daisy cheerfully , 'and if you wanr
to cake down any addrcsses, here's my littlc gold pencil.' She
looked around after a moment and told me chac che girl was
'coarse buc prerty'. 1 knew that excepc for che half hour she'd
been alone with Gacsby, she wasn't having a good time. Daisy a11d Gatsby danced.
