44 The Greal Gatshy Gatsby and Daisy meet again 45

                In the morning,
                In the evening,
                  Ain 't we got fun-
0 u tside che wind was loud. Ali the lights were going on
in Wcsr Egg now; the electric trains wcrc carrying men home
frorn New York, and rhere was excitement in the air.
One thing's sure and nothing's surer,
The rich get rich and the poor get - children.
                  In the meantime,
                  In between time-
As I went over to say goodbye, I saw rhe dazcd look on
Gatsby's face again. Was he doubting the quality of his
happiness? Almost five years! Therc must have becn moments,
cven rhat afternoon, when Daisy disappointed him a littlc- not
through her own fault, bue because of the enormous vitality
of his dream. It had gone beyond her, bcyond cveryrhing. He
had thrown his whole being into crearing ir, adding to ir every
bright fearher that came his way. No fire or freshness can
challenge what a man can keep safe in his ghostly hcart.
While I watched him, his hand took hold of hers, and as
she said something low in his ea r, he turncd toward her with
a sudden rush of fceling. I think that feverish, exci ting voice
of hers held him mosr, becausc it couldn't be dreamed - rhat
      voice was a dcathless song.
They had forgorten me, bur Daisy looked up and held out
her hand; Garsby didn't know me now at ali. I looked once
more ar them and rhey looked back at me, distantly, enclosed
in thcir own bright world. Then I went out of the room and
clown thc grand steps into tbe rain, leaving them thcre together.
'I'd /ike to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it
and push you around,' whispered Daisy.
